Team Kendall Racer of the Month - September 2012 - Brian Hatlestad

For Brian Hatlestad of Oklahoma City, Okla., Team Kendall's September Racer of the Month, racing started out as an enjoyable hobby while he kept busy at his day job. Hatlestad established HMD (Hand-Me-Down) Racing in the fall of 1988 while still serving in the United States Air Force. Throughout his service, he spent his free time volunteering at local race tracks within hauling distance of the base to gain experience. Then, upon being honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1990, Hatlestad, along with his HMD crew, decided to bring the years of experience earned while working on the sidelines onto the track.

For the past 24 years, Hatlestad has accomplished a lot as a racer, including being named Sportsman of the Year in 1989 and 2000 - an accolade given by fans and fellow drivers at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla. Continuing his success in 2000, Hatlestad achieved the ultimate feat of completing a "clean sweep" of a racing event - winning the heat race, trophy dash and feature event in the same night against some of the best sprint car drivers in the Midwest. That same year, he earned the Rookie of the Year title.

"Out of all my racing accomplishments, I'd have to say earning the Sportsman of the Year title has been my favorite," Hatlestad shared. "I pride myself on following the rules and driving the way I would want my competitors to drive, so it feels good to know my peers acknowledge that."

Recently, Hatlestad relocated to Arizona and has been competing in the Arizona Desert Dwarf Car Series with his 1934 Sedan Desert Ford Dwarf Car, powered by a 2003 Kawasaki ZRX1200 powerplant. Last year, Hatlestad finished in the top ten in points, and he hopes to surpass that goal this year by finishing in the top five.

With racing playing such a prominent role in Hatlestad's life, he decided to rejoin Team Kendall this year. "I was enrolled in the Team Kendall program back in the early 1990's, and after taking a few years off to support my daughter in college, I decided it was time to get back into the program," he explained. "Not only does Kendall Motor Oil provide benefits for my vehicle's engine, but the Team Kendall program also offers me additional exposure as a racer."

Marketer Josh Kinsey of Union Distributing in Phoenix, Ariz., is thrilled to see Hatlestad back in the program. "Brian is an impressive individual in the fact that he has won several races while maintaining integrity both on and off the track," Kinsey explained. "I'm happy to help him and HMD Racing any way I can because he is a great guy and a remarkable racer."

Hatlestad is set to compete in the Dwarf Car Nationals this November at the Tucson International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. We congratulate Hatlestad on being named Team Kendall's Racer of the Month for September, and look forward to watching him continue to excel.
