Kendall Motor Oil Sponsors Hydroplane Race Team

Professional hydroplane racing is synonymous with speed, risk and intensity, and Kendall Motor oil is proud to sponsor one of the American Power Boat Association's (APBA) top boat racers, Jerry Hopp. As a 60-something-year-old grandfather, Hopp is known throughout his community as the World's Fastest Grandpa - a name that proved to be true as he closed out the 2012 season finishing in the top three for points. Hopp's son, Greg, grabbed the first place title, making the father-son due two of the most successful boat racers in the APBA.

In addition to competing against other powerful speed boats for points, APBA drivers race individually in competitions, such as the Kilo Straight Away, in hopes of setting speed records. The Kilo Straight Away requires drivers to race in one direction through a measured kilometer. A run in the opposite direction is also timed, and the average of the two runs is the recorded speed for the run. This is a popular contest among boat racers, as it begs the question, "Which boat is the fastest?"

"My nickname, 'World's Fastest Grandpa,' came about last year after I set the Kilo Straight Away record, beating my son's record from the year before," Hopp said lightheartedly. "I averaged 169 mph, and my son's average was 165 mph."

Although Hopp and his son thrive on friendly competition and drive separate custom-made boats, they agree on one thing: Kendall Motor Oil is superior oil. "Oil is the base of every engine, you build a good engine, but it's only as good as the oil as you put in it and that's why we use Kendall GT-1® High Performance Motor Oil with Liquid Titanium® protection additive," said Hopp.

Keeping quality oil in the engine is one aspect of being a successful boat racer. The Hopps have also put together solid crew teams that are meticulous with maintenance and have strong radio communication on the shoreline, which is important for boat drivers to ensure safety. The Hopps currently race in the APBA Grand Prix class, the fastest and one of the most competitive classes in the world, so safety is always the number one priority.

"Combined, Jerry and Greg have won hundreds of races and set impressive records. Supplying them with oil was an easy decision because I knew they'd make us proud," said Phil Maasen of Motor Oil Supply in Kent, Wash.

The Hopps will begin their 2013 season in April in Lake Havasu, Ariz, where they will continue to compete against one another in the APBA Grand Prix class. We look forward to watching them represent Kendall Motor Oil next season and wish them the best of luck!
