January 2014 Marketer of the Month - Nelson Petroleum


A proud Phillips 66 Lubricants Marketer for nearly 30 years, Nelson Petroleum’s focus on customer satisfaction has been its driving force and key to success. “The company takes pride in its best-in-class customer relations, which has resulted in gaining and maintaining highly sought-after clientele throughout the Northwest,” shares MSR Dennis Hammons.

Established in 1967 by Jim Nelson, the company began as a fuel and lubricants distributor serving the Arlington, Wash., community. At that time, Nelson Petroleum’s sales team consisted of less than 10 people who took customer orders and delivered them personally throughout Snohomish County. Over the next several decades, the company endured tremendous growth and increased its customer base through various acquisitions, growing its bulk lubricant volume and adding new members to its staff. Today, Nelson Petroleum, headquartered in Everett, Wash., is run by Jim’s son, Mark Nelson. “We’re still a family-owned and operated company, but a lot has changed since my father started Nelson back in 1967. We’ve added four bulk fuel and lubricant storage locations in Snohomish County, making it easier to serve our customers in an efficient and timely manner,” says Mark Nelson, president of Nelson Petroleum. “Plus, we’ve grown to over 50 employees.”

Nelson Petroleum provides premium lubricants and bulk fuels to Commercial and Industrial businesses in western Wash. Due to the fierce competition in the Puget Sound region, the company focuses its efforts on offering second-to-none reliable, customer service. “We’re lucky to have great employees who strive to do only the best for our customers,” continues Nelson. “Our approach is to be a business partner for the customer, creating solutions for their problems and meeting their needs.”

The company has worked with Phillips 66 Lubricants for 29 years and raves about the support it has received. “Not only are we proud to have Phillips 66 Lubricants as a business partner and offer its quality lubricants, but we’re amazed at the top-tier service and support we’ve received over the years. It’s important for us in today’s business age,” adds Nelson. Historically, Nelson Petroleum focused on the Heavy Duty and Industrial lubricant segments, primarily selling 76® lubricants. In the mid-‘90s, the company developed its Passenger Car Motor Oil (PCMO) segment, and proudly began to offer the Kendall Motor Oil line, which customers know and respect. “Today, we offer an even mix of Phillips 66 Lubricants’ Commercial, Industrial and Automotive lubricants, although we’ve had the most growth and customer feedback on Kendall’s family of lubricants.”

The company utilizes several Phillips 66 Lubricants' business programs as a way to build stronger relationships with its customers and offer added incentives. “We’ve had success in using the Kendall New Account Conversion Allowance program as a closing tool when conversing with customers,” Nelson says. Aside from that, the company has taken advantage of Fleet Finder, Factory Finder, the Free Gas Sweepstakes, Business Development Allowance (BDA), and more.
