August 2009 Racer of the Month – Gary Parker
09/06/2009
This month we are excited to announce 30-year Sand Drag Racing veteran Gary Parker as the August Team Kendall Racer of the Month. Parker, who got his start racing go-karts at the age of 12, was drawn to Sand Drag Racing after spending a few years in competitive Mud Racing.
The seasoned dragster, who is currently competing in the Pro 1 Class, has graced the pages of four national magazines over the past 20 years with his custom-built 1915 CC Turbo Charged Volkswagen Sand Dragster, which he calls the "Air Express." In addition to these impressive accolades, Parker cites his commemorative plaque from the Missouri Sand Racing Association for 20 years of devotion and dedication as his most prized achievement to date. Parker says he has learned many lessons during his long history in the sport—the most significant being the importance of a quality maintenance routine.
"A rock-solid maintenance program is equally as important as the mental and physical preparation for each race," explains Parker. "My team has trusted our engine to Kendall Motor Oil time and time again as it provides superior performance benefits and stands up to the rigorous demands of drag racing."
Parker is about halfway through his season and is currently gearing up for the Watermelon Nationals in Atoka, Okla., in mid-September. His primary focus for the remainder of the season is to finish each race strong and to qualify for the Winter Nationals in Primm, Nev., this October. Beyond winning, Parker points out that the true joy of this sport is found in the camaraderie and sportsmanlike interaction with fellow racers at tracks around the country.
"Gary's dedication to racing and unwavering sportsmanship made him a fitting candidate for Team Kendall," explains Melinda Godoy of Double C Oil Distributors Inc., in Carrollton, Texas. "We are proud to support Gary in his future racing endeavors."
We are proud to be a part of this winning team and wish Parker the best for the rest of the 2009 season!
